A Roman Catholic priest in southwestern Ecuador died after being struck by a falling crucifix during a livestreamed evening Mass on Saturday. The Archdiocese of Guayaquil identified the clergyman as Patricio Sánchez, who served at Perpetuo Socorro Church in the coastal city of Guayaquil, approximately 165 miles southwest of Quito, the capital.

Footage of the Mass shows a large crucifix detaching from the wall above the altar and falling onto Sánchez’s head as he conducted the service. The priest appeared unaware of the crucifix’s descent before he was hit. The livestream captured the immediate reaction of worshippers, who called out for help following the accident.

Sánchez was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic religious order established in 1732 with a presence in around 80 countries. Authorities in the region have yet to release official comments regarding the circumstances of the incident.
