Families gathered to welcome home Royal Navy personnel following a four-month deployment in the eastern Mediterranean, where they supported the defense of United Kingdom forces amid increased regional tensions involving Iran. The contingent, drawn from 820 Naval Air Squadron, conducted aerial patrols based out of RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus.

The deployment featured two Merlin Mk2 airborne surveillance and control helicopters tasked with monitoring airspace to enhance situational awareness for UK military operations. After completing their mission, the helicopters made their way across Europe before arriving at their home base at RNAS Culdrose near Helston in Cornwall.

The naval air squadron’s presence in the eastern Mediterranean formed part of broader measures to safeguard UK interests and personnel in a region marked by ongoing geopolitical challenges. The operation underscored the Royal Navy’s commitment to maintaining maritime security and surveillance capabilities during periods of heightened tension.
