A Gateshead-based civil engineering firm, BCE Northern Ltd, is projecting a 50% increase in turnover by the end of 2026, following a series of recent contract wins and framework agreements. Established 15 years ago by managing director Adrian Barton, the company reported a turnover of £8 million last year and has secured £10 million in work during the first quarter of this year.
BCE Northern provides a range of civil engineering services, including building development, excavation, site clearance, groundworks, urban regeneration, highway works, and landscaping. The firm serves local authorities such as Newcastle City Council, Hartlepool Borough Council, and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. More recently, it has been appointed as Northumbrian Water Group’s AMP8 water infrastructure partner.
The company’s leadership team includes directors Chris Byrne and Neil Rooney, who oversee operations and preconstruction delivery, respectively. Family members are also involved in the business; Joe Barton serves as health and safety manager, while Emily Barton manages social value and bids. Adrian Barton highlighted the importance of the recently formed board of directors in steering the company’s growth and profitability.
“Our progress over the past two years has been pivotal, with new client workload and strengthened relationships at the core,” Barton said. He emphasized the contribution of the company’s workforce of over 40 employees, describing their loyalty and professionalism as foundational to the firm’s expansion.
Recent projects underline BCE Northern’s growing portfolio and include a £1.2 million redevelopment of Seaburn Play Park for Sunderland City Council, the expansion of Leeds Bradford Airport’s £2.5 million parking facilities, a £2.5 million transformation of Bedford Street in collaboration with Capita for North Tyneside Council, and a £3.8 million investment in an active travel route at Hartlepool Headland and Marina.
Barton also noted that the company has invested in new machinery, technology, and staffing, including the addition of two graduate apprentices, aiming to enhance both project delivery and operational efficiency. He credited the ongoing success to the firm’s employees and supply chain partners, acknowledging their role in driving BCE Northern’s current growth trajectory.
