Carlos Penzo, 36, was found stabbed to death in the bathtub of his luxury apartment at the Hayden, a high-rise building in Long Island City, Queens, on Saturday, law enforcement sources said. The circumstances surrounding his death have left his family seeking answers.

Police were initially alerted to the scene at approximately 9:59 a.m. after receiving a 911 call from Penzo’s cell phone. Responding officers were unable to gain immediate access to his apartment. Later that day, at around 12:35 p.m., an alarm was triggered when building security personnel spotted a naked man on the roof of the 51-story building. The man was reported to have been spraying a fire extinguisher at security cameras, apparently attempting to disable them.

Security staff notified police, who apprehended the individual in a hallway on the building’s fourth floor as he attempted to force entry into Penzo’s apartment. No charges have yet been filed against the man. Authorities believe up to four men were inside the unit in the hours prior to the discovery of Penzo’s body, although their identities remain unclear.

Penzo’s sister, Christine Piantini, described her brother as a gentle and well-loved individual who was not known to be aggressive. “For this to happen to him in the comfort of his own home is unbelievable,” she said. The family has expressed confusion and distress over the unsettling details of the case.

According to police sources, Penzo was found sitting upright in his bathtub with a knife and a Taser resting in his lap. He had sustained deep stab wounds, including injuries to his face, head, and chest. Investigators noted blood evidence in the bedroom and kitchen areas, as well as a broken knife discovered in the sink.

The investigation into Penzo’s death remains ongoing, and no arrests have been made. Authorities have not disclosed details about the potential motive or the relationship between Penzo and the men who were allegedly present at the scene before his death.
