The family of a seven-year-old girl who died in a house fire has paid tribute to her, describing her as “deeply loved and will be missed beyond words.” Valentina Foster and her aunt, Natalie McDonald, 34, died in the early hours of August 26 following a blaze at a property in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough.
Cleveland police confirmed that several others were injured in the incident. A 48-year-old woman remains in critical but stable condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, while a 27-year-old man is receiving treatment at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Two teenage girls who suffered non-life-threatening injuries have since been discharged. The identities of some injured parties have not been disclosed due to their ages.
Twenty-three-year-old Jaden Wright, who is of no fixed address, appeared at Teesside magistrates' court on Tuesday facing multiple charges linked to the fire. He was charged with the murders of Valentina Foster and Natalie McDonald, as well as two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent and two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent relating to six people believed to have been in the house at the time. In addition, Wright faces charges of grievous bodily harm and intentional strangulation connected to a separate incident that occurred the day before the blaze.
The court hearing lasted under two minutes, with Wright remanded in custody and scheduled to appear at Teesside Crown Court the following day. Meanwhile, a 31-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the case has been released without charge.
In the days following the fire, family members held a memorial event near the site where dozens of heart-shaped balloons were released in honor of Valentina. In a statement released by Cleveland police on behalf of Valentina’s family, they expressed their profound grief, saying, “Our lives have changed forever, and we are struggling to come to terms with this devastating loss. Our daughter will always be in our hearts, and her memory will live with us forever. Forever missed by her brothers and sisters.”
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire and the events leading to the charges brought against Wright. No further details have been disclosed regarding the ongoing inquiries at this time.
