Emirates GBR sailor Dylan Fletcher has praised Dubai’s Mina Rashid as an exceptional venue for the upcoming Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix presented by DP World, scheduled for November 21-22. Fletcher, part of the reigning Rolex SailGP Championship titleholders, highlighted the unique proximity fans enjoy to the high-speed racing action on the water, describing the racecourse as “fantastic.”
The Dubai stop is the penultimate event of the 2026 SailGP season, marking a critical juncture for the 13 national teams competing in the series. Each team races identical F50 foiling catamarans, which are engineered for speed and agility. These vessels, measuring 50 feet in length, “fly” above the water on carbon-fiber foils that significantly reduce drag, enabling speeds of up to 100 km/h. The rigid wings that power the boats can reach up to 29 meters tall, surpassing the wingspan of a commercial aircraft such as the Airbus A380.
Fletcher explained the intensity and technical challenge of racing these boats, likening the experience to navigating a car over rough terrain while contending with the elements. The persistent noise of the foils, which produce a distinctive whistling sound, requires in-boat communication to be continuous amid the high-speed environment. Despite the thrilling speed and spectacle, the sport carries inherent risks due to the sharp edges of the foils, demanding both skill and caution from the crews.
The sailing conditions in the UAE introduce additional complexity. The region’s typically flat waters and lighter winds necessitate heightened precision and error-free execution to harness optimal boat performance. Fletcher noted that SailGP racing here differs markedly from traditional sailing—eschewing leisurely yacht cruising for a demanding, high-adrenaline competition that leaves little margin for mistakes.
This season, following the Dubai event, the championship will conclude in Abu Dhabi with the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Sail Grand Prix 2026 Season Grand Final at Emirates Palace, where the overall winner will be decided. Fletcher and his team, having returned to SailGP in Dubai for the 2025 season opener with a podium finish, see these races as pivotal for their title defense prospects.
Fletcher’s extensive background includes winning Olympic gold, a Moth world championship, and co-helming Britain’s America’s Cup challenge. His perspective brings valuable insight into the evolving dynamics of SailGP, where the combination of athlete skill and cutting-edge technology defines the high-stakes pursuit for sailing supremacy.
