Hurricane Fly, a celebrated hurdler trained by Willie Mullins, has died at the age of 22. The horse passed away at the Irish National Stud, where he had spent the last 11 years in retirement following a distinguished racing career.

Hurricane Fly earned a prominent place in National Hunt racing history with numerous achievements, including two victories in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, winning in 2011 and 2013. He became only the second horse to reclaim that title after finishing third in the 2012 running. Beyond Cheltenham, Hurricane Fly dominated the Irish Champion Hurdle, capturing the race a record five times. His final Grade 1 victory came as an 11-year-old at Leopardstown in 2015, marking his 22nd top-level win.

Ruby Walsh, who was Hurricane Fly’s regular jockey, praised the horse’s qualities, describing him as a standout competitor over hurdles. Walsh highlighted Hurricane Fly’s combination of speed, stamina, and skill, calling him “the perfect horse” for the discipline despite his relatively small stature.

Hurricane Fly’s passing marks the end of an era for one of Ireland’s most successful and admired hurdlers. His achievements have left a lasting legacy in the sport, particularly for trainer Willie Mullins and those who followed his career closely.
