Farnham Town’s debut in Step 2 ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat to AFC Totton on Saturday, with a remarkable long-range strike from Christie Ward securing all three points for the visitors.

The match began with an early opportunity for Farnham, as striker Rakish Bingham, making his debut, was set up by Darryl Sanders but failed to find the target, his low shot comfortably saved by Totton goalkeeper Ryan Gosney. The first notable chance for Totton came shortly after, when a penalty was awarded after Ryan Kinnane was judged to have fouled Sol Wanjau-Smith. However, Farnham’s Michael Eacott denied Tony Lee’s penalty effort, keeping the scoreline level.

The game featured a number of promising moments, including a swift counterattack from Farnham on the hour mark. Sanders found himself in a prime scoring position, but his attempt lacked the necessary curve to beat Gosney. The match maintained a goalless deadlock for much of the duration, raising the prospect of a 0-0 draw.

Farnham chairman Harry Hugo had offered full refunds to away supporters if the game ended scoreless, adding an element of anticipation as the clock ticked down. The deadlock was broken 17 minutes before full time when Farnham cleared the ball to midfielder Christie Ward. Ward positioned himself well before unleashing a fierce volley from approximately 30 yards out, the ball dipping dramatically and beating Eacott to give AFC Totton the lead.

Despite Farnham’s efforts in the final stages, the visitors held firm to secure a 1-0 victory, marking a challenging start for Farnham Town at this level of competition.
