Early morning riots erupted near the historical Fatehpurri Mosque in Delhi in connection with the Bakr Id festival, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The unrest stemmed from longstanding tensions between Hindu and Muslim communities, reportedly linked to the ritual of leading a cow through Hindu neighborhoods for sacrificial purposes.

British authorities responded swiftly to the outbreak of violence, deploying soldiers throughout the city’s main streets. Armored vehicles and cavalry units were also mobilized to assist in maintaining order. Police and military forces had previously employed stringent measures to prevent disturbances, successfully averting a larger riot yesterday and quickly regaining control following today’s incident.

The immediate trigger of the violence remains unclear. Reports indicate that a group of Muslims emerged from the mosque and assaulted a Hindu grocer, which escalated into broader conflict. Confirmed casualties include one Hindu individual who was fatally stabbed in front of the Fatehpurri Mosque. In total, 43 people were reported injured, comprising one police sergeant, fourteen Hindus, and the remainder Muslims.

In response to the unrest, the District Magistrate has imposed restrictions, declaring all public assemblies of more than five individuals illegal to prevent further escalation. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as they work to restore calm in the area.
