A 21-year-old woman died after falling 130 feet during a bungee jumping accident in Limeira, São Paulo, on Saturday. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas was reportedly pushed off a bridge known locally as the "Skeleton Bridge" without a bungee cord attached, resulting in a fatal fall, according to Brazilian authorities.
Video footage circulating on social media captured the moment de Freitas was carried to the edge of the bridge by staff members and then released. A bystander recording the scene is heard shouting, “Guys, the rope!” after realizing the cord was left on the ground and not secured to the jumper. Emergency services, including a police helicopter, were dispatched to the scene, but de Freitas died before she could be transported to a hospital.
Police confirmed that de Freitas’ fiancé was present during the incident. She was a student of physical education and sports management and had posted a message on her Instagram story shortly before the jump.
In response to the tragedy, six individuals connected to the operation have been detained as part of an ongoing investigation. Officials are examining the circumstances that led to the failure to secure the bungee cord, which resulted in the fatal accident.
The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols in adventure sports, with authorities emphasizing the need for stringent checks and proper oversight to prevent similar tragedies.
