Tony Bartlett, 39, from Axminster, Devon, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years for the murder of his four-week-old son, Atticus. The conviction follows an incident in which Bartlett, after consuming eight and a half pints of lager alongside the infant’s mother, violently shook the baby.

Medical testimony presented during the trial established that the infant sustained hypoxic-ischaemic brain damage and multiple rib fractures as a result of the shaking. These injuries were determined to be the direct cause of Atticus’s death.

Mr Justice Cavanagh presided over the case and delivered the life sentence, reflecting the severity of the child’s fatal injuries and the circumstances under which they were inflicted.
