Lamis Asiri, a final-year student at Prince Musaid bin Abdulrahman University in Abha, was among the 13 people killed in an attack at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 10. The assault also injured more than 300 others. Lamis had traveled to Riyadh with her mother for a medical appointment and was waiting in the departure area for their flight back to Abha when the incident occurred. Her mother survived and is currently receiving medical treatment.
In the hours before the attack, Lamis had been in contact with her father via WhatsApp. After the last messages exchanged as they awaited boarding, communication abruptly ceased. As news of the attack spread, her family sought information from emergency services and officials but initially faced uncertainty. Upon learning of Lamis’s death, her father struggled with disbelief and denial. He then traveled from Abha to Riyadh, where he identified her body the following day at Al-Shumaisi Hospital. Lamis was later buried at Al-Shifa Cemetery.
While mourning his daughter, her father has also been caring for her injured mother, who underwent surgery at the National Guard Hospital to remove shrapnel and treat fractures in her feet. Despite the injuries, her condition is described as stable and improving.
Lamis’s father spoke of the young woman she was before her life was cut short, recalling that she had recently completed her studies ahead of final exams. He also remembered her recent charitable donation through the Ehsan platform and conversations in which she sought knowledge about religious teachings, interpreting these actions as a farewell.
The family has received numerous condolences from across Saudi Arabia. The office of the interior minister sent a telegram expressing sympathy, Asir Governor Prince Turki bin Talal personally reached out to the family, and Education Minister Yousef Al-Benyan promised to issue a graduation certificate in Lamis’s name. Her father described the gesture as a meaningful symbolic recognition, honoring her academic efforts even though she will not complete her studies.
Reflecting on his daughter’s life, Lamis’s father emphasized the close bond they shared and expressed his faith in her afterlife. "I want you to bear witness that I was completely pleased with my daughter, and she was pleased with me," he said, adding prayers for her to be granted paradise. The family continues to grieve while finding solace in memories and community support.
