Malaysia’s archery team concluded their campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games without securing a medal after their final competitor, Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh, was eliminated in the women’s individual compound quarter-finals on Thursday. Fatin was narrowly defeated 145-147 by South Korea’s world No. 66 archer Park Jung-yoon at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square in Aichi, Japan.

At 35 years old, Fatin acknowledged that her performance was below her expectations but viewed it as an improvement compared to her showing at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games. In that tournament, she was eliminated early after a close 140-141 loss to Thailand’s Kanyavee Maneesombatkul.

“Today’s performance was not my best, but I gave it my all. It just wasn’t meant to be,” Fatin said in an interview. “Overall, I’m satisfied with my performance this time, especially compared to the previous edition, both in terms of scores and match competitiveness.”

Archery was among the sports targeted by Malaysia to bring home medals at the Games, raising expectations following the men’s compound team’s bronze medal in Hangzhou 2022. That team, consisting of Juwaidi Mazuki, Alang Ariff Aqil, and Syafiq Ariffin, had delivered Malaysia’s last archery podium finish at the Asian Games.

Looking ahead, Fatin expressed uncertainty about her participation in the next Asian Games, planned for Doha. The Olympic Council of Asia is considering holding the games in 2031, a year later than the usual four-year cycle, to better align with the Olympic schedule. “I’m still not sure, but if my services are needed, God willing, I will consider it,” she added.

With Fatin’s defeat, Malaysia’s archery contingent ended the 2026 Asian Games without a medal, marking a downturn from their previous performance at the continental event.
