Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), has seen his net worth nearly double since retiring from government service at the end of 2022, reaching an estimated $27.5 million, according to a financial analysis based on public disclosures.
Fauci stepped down after leading NIAID for 38 years, during which time he was the highest-paid federal employee, earning $480,654 annually at the time of his retirement—approximately $80,000 more than the sitting president’s salary. His departure marked the end of a prominent career, including his role as a leading advisor during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since retiring, Fauci has amassed an estimated $12.5 million through various income streams, including book deals, speaking engagements, teaching positions, awards, and a government pension. Financial disclosure forms reviewed by watchdog groups reveal that Fauci earned $3.5 million in his first year after leaving public office.
In the public speaking arena, Fauci has commanded fees estimated between $50,000 and $100,000 per event. Records show that since 2024 he has appeared at least 18 times, generating at least $900,000 from these engagements. In April, he received $75,000 to speak at the University of Minnesota, and he is scheduled to appear at an event in Wilton Manors, Florida, later this year. Ticket prices for this upcoming appearance have been set at $160 each.
Fauci also published his memoir, “On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service,” in which he recounts his career and expresses a desire to share his knowledge with younger generations. Publishing industry sources report that Fauci received a $5 million advance from Viking, an imprint of Penguin Random House, for the book.
Academia has become another significant source of income for Fauci. He currently holds a senior teaching position at Georgetown University, where the average faculty salary is around $233,000. Estimates suggest Fauci has earned approximately $750,000 from teaching roles since retirement. In addition, he has received several monetary awards, including $50,000 from Columbia University’s Calderone Prize and $40,000 from the National Academy of Medicine’s Lienhard Prize.
Fauci also continues to receive royalties from a textbook he has edited since the 1980s, with annual payments estimated to range from $100,000 to $1 million. His government pension, reportedly exceeding $350,000 annually, is considered the largest in federal history and has contributed roughly $1.5 million to his post-retirement income from taxpayer funds.
Taken together, these sources have substantially increased Fauci’s financial standing in the three and a half years since he retired from government service.
