FC United of Manchester is aiming to build on recent success in the FA Cup as they seek to improve their league form in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. Manager Mark Beesley set high expectations following the team’s convincing 3-0 victory over Worksop Town, a higher-ranked opponent, last weekend. The win marked FC United’s third triumph in the FA Cup this season and their first clean sheet since March.
Reflecting on the result, Beesley praised his squad’s clinical finishing and defensive organization, underscoring the importance of replicating that performance against teams from their own division. FC United currently sits at the bottom of the league table with just five points from their first ten matches, including only one win—a 2-1 home victory over Warrington Town last month. This comes as a decline for the club that finished third the previous campaign but fell short in the play-offs semi-finals against Warrington Rylands.
“We should be doing better, and we know it,” Beesley acknowledged, citing injuries and other challenges but emphasizing the need for a quick turnaround in form. Despite struggles in the league, success in knockout competitions has helped boost team morale. Goals from Jordan Buckley, Michael Donohue, and Matty Grivosti secured the win against Worksop Town, providing tangible proof of the team’s potential.
Looking ahead, FC United was drawn to face Altrincham, a National League side performing strongly this season, in Monday’s FA Cup final qualifying round. Beesley, who had a playing stint at Altrincham in 2010-11, expressed cautious optimism about the matchup. “We can give it a go without pressure because they’ll be expected to beat us,” he said, acknowledging the evolution of Altrincham into a formidable club at the higher level.
Beesley noted improvements in FC United’s attacking play and defensive resilience observed during September, which he hopes will be crucial in mounting an upset against Altrincham. The winner on Saturday will advance to the FA Cup first round, an achievement FC United has reached three times previously, most recently in 2020 when they hosted Doncaster Rovers in a televised fixture.
There is a historical resonance for the Reds ahead of the upcoming fixture, as long-time supporters recall a memorable FA Cup victory at Altrincham’s Moss Lane ground nearly two decades ago. Going further in the competition would provide a much-needed boost for FC United and their supporters. “If the FA Cup is a distraction right now, then let’s make it a positive one,” Beesley added.
With league struggles ongoing, FC United will look to their cup run to energize the squad and deliver a potential turning point in their season.
