An advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expressed cautious support for Grail’s multi-cancer early detection test during a meeting this week, though the panel’s recommendations are nonbinding. The California-based biotechnology firm anticipates a formal FDA decision in the coming months.
Josh Ofman, Grail’s chief executive, stated that the panel’s feedback reinforced the company’s commitment to maintaining a rigorous evidence standard for its blood-based cancer screening technology. Grail’s shares, which had risen more than 30 percent prior to the advisory vote on investor optimism, gained an additional 9 percent following the meeting.
The vote comes after a turbulent period for Grail, which has faced significant challenges following its acquisition by Illumina. Illumina, a genetic sequencing company, originally spun off Grail in 2016 before attempting to reacquire it in 2021. The proposed buyout encountered regulatory obstacles in both the United States and European Union, with authorities initially blocking the deal. Illumina proceeded with the acquisition regardless, prompting investor opposition and a high-profile boardroom conflict involving activist shareholder Carl Icahn in 2023.
Grail’s prospects have largely hinged on data from a large-scale trial conducted in the United Kingdom, involving over 142,000 participants. The study aimed to demonstrate that early detection via Grail’s test would significantly reduce late-stage cancer diagnoses. However, published results revealed no substantial difference in late-stage cancer detection between those screened with Grail’s test and the control group, leading to a nearly 50 percent drop in Grail’s stock price in February.
In addition to seeking regulatory approval, Grail is set to participate as a top sponsor at the upcoming Make America Healthy Again summit in Washington next week. The company said it plans to use the platform to promote increased focus on disease prediction, prevention, and early detection as national health priorities. Grail did not disclose the financial terms of its sponsorship.
