A federal judge in San Francisco dismissed a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, against OpenAI, the company co-founded by Sam Altman. The suit, brought Monday, alleged that OpenAI stole trade secrets related to xAI’s chatbot technology.
District Judge Rita Lin ruled that xAI did not provide sufficient evidence to prove that OpenAI induced former xAI senior engineer Xuechen Li to share confidential information about the company’s Grok chatbot. The judge also found no basis to believe OpenAI engineers were aware that Li might have disclosed proprietary information.
In the case, xAI accused OpenAI of misappropriating trade secrets to gain a competitive advantage in the AI chatbot market. OpenAI denied the allegations, and the dismissal indicates the court found the evidence insufficient to proceed on those claims.
xAI has also filed a separate lawsuit directly against Li, alleging that he breached confidentiality agreements and improperly took proprietary information. The specifics of that related case have not been resolved.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between some of the leading companies in the artificial intelligence sector as they compete to develop advanced chatbot technologies. Trade secret concerns have become increasingly prominent as firms seek to protect their innovations while navigating a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
