The Oman School Sports Association, in collaboration with the Directorate General of Education in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, recently hosted a festival aimed at promoting sports participation among students with disabilities. The event took place at the Recreational Centre in the Wilayat of Manah and brought together 107 male and female students from intellectual and hearing inclusion classes.

The festival was held under the patronage of Dr Sultan bin Khamis al Yahyai, Director General of Scouts, Guides and Student Activities, and was attended by Hilal bin Abdullah al Alawi, Assistant Director General of the Directorate General of Education in Al Dakhiliyah. A team of 35 organisers supported the event.

Designed to foster an inclusive environment for sporting and recreational activities, the initiative sought to help students develop physical and social skills, build confidence, and encourage independence as well as teamwork. The programme included a range of activities such as athletics, mini-games, boccia, and bowling, alongside recreational options like plaster colouring, face painting, henna art, and a popcorn corner.

Participants were grouped into six categories based on age, gender, and type of disability, accommodating students both under and over the age of 10 with hearing or intellectual disabilities. Activities were organised across four rotating stations, with each session lasting 30 minutes to ensure all participants experienced multiple sporting and recreational opportunities.

The festival emphasized the significance of inclusive physical education and equal access to sporting experiences for students with disabilities. By adapting activities to meet diverse needs, the event aimed to enhance physical abilities, promote social interaction, build self-confidence, and encourage independence among participants.

Moreover, the event highlighted the value of collaboration between sports associations, educational authorities, and schools to broaden access to sports programs. Organizers stressed that fostering participation in school and community life helps empower students of all abilities.
