FIFA has launched an investigation following a post-match altercation during the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on Sunday. The disciplinary review comes after video footage revealed a brief physical confrontation among players during Spain’s celebration of their victory.

The incident unfolded shortly after the final whistle at the stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was seen shoving Spain defender Eric Garcia near the throat. When Spain substitute Gavi intervened, Paredes pushed him to the ground, escalating tensions.

Further clashes involved Spain captain Rodri, who appeared to be struck in the stomach by Argentina defender Nahuel Molina as the Spanish players regrouped. Molina then confronted Rodri verbally. The verbal exchange involved former Manchester City teammates Rodri and Nicolas Otamendi, the latter also an Argentina player.

Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni, along with other players from both sides, stepped in promptly to defuse the situation and prevent the escalation of conflict on the field.

In response to the incidents, FIFA released a statement confirming that the organization’s Disciplinary and Ethics Committee had appointed a prosecutor to review potential violations of FIFA’s disciplinary code related to the conduct observed after the match.
