An F-35B fighter jet crashed Friday morning at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, prompting an emergency response and sparking a significant fire. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. on the flight line near the intersection of Kearny Villa Road and Johnson Road, a military official confirmed.

The crash resulted in a “Class A mishap,” a classification used by the military to denote events involving death, permanent disability, destruction of an aircraft, or equipment damage valued at $2.5 million or more. The single-seat aircraft was occupied at the time of the accident.

The pilot successfully ejected from the cockpit as flames erupted from the fighter jet, which reportedly struck the ground with its tail low and nose angled upward.
