Filipino educators in Qatar are advocating for the responsible integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in classroom settings as the technology increasingly reshapes educational landscapes. This perspective was emphasized during a panel discussion held on August 27, convened by the Philippine Embassy in Qatar in collaboration with the Association of Filipino Educators – Qatar (AFE-Q). The event, part of the embassy’s observance of Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa under the theme “Wikang Filipino at AI: Kasangkapan sa Pananaliksik at Tulay sa Yaman ng Impormasyon,” brought together educators, parents, and other stakeholders to explore both the opportunities and challenges posed by AI in education.

Philippine Ambassador to Qatar, Mardomel Celo Melicor, described AI as a disruptive force fundamentally altering traditional perceptions of teaching and learning. Panelists, including Qatar-based Filipino educators and research specialists Precioso Tano, PhD; Julie Ann Real, PhD; and Brayn B Biazon, PhD, noted that AI tools, particularly chatbots, have changed how students access knowledge, offering immediate answers and thereby reducing some of the traditional struggle associated with independent learning.

While acknowledging AI’s capacity to enhance efficiency and accessibility, the educators stressed concerns regarding overreliance on AI-generated responses, which can undermine curiosity, critical thinking, and the discovery process. They advocated for the redesign of instructional approaches, integrating AI with authentic assessments such as hands-on activities, oral validation, and real-world applications to better evaluate true student understanding. Oral defense, recitation, and personalized questioning were suggested as effective strategies to distinguish genuine mastery from mere reproduction of AI-generated content.

For teachers, AI was characterized as a potential “co-pilot” that can streamline lesson preparation and research, freeing up time to focus more closely on individual student needs. Panelists highlighted AI’s capacity to support differentiated instruction and accommodate diverse learning styles, including special education requirements, while emphasizing the need for alignment with the Philippine Department of Education’s curriculum standards. However, they also acknowledged that factors such as age and familiarity with digital tools may limit some educators’ adoption of AI, underlining the importance of ongoing professional development to maintain technological proficiency.

The discussion also addressed challenges such as data privacy, academic integrity, and ethical research practices, urging both educators and students to critically assess AI outputs and guard against “false intelligence”—information that may appear authoritative but lacks accuracy. The panel called for schools to establish clear protocols delineating acceptable AI use, advocating responsible and ethical engagement over outright bans.

Beyond efficiency and assessment, the panel underscored AI’s potential to serve as a catalyst for innovation and creativity. Examples were cited of students using AI-driven applications for research projects, demonstrating its capacity to inspire problem-solving beyond simple information retrieval.

Notwithstanding AI’s growing role, the panelists agreed that technology cannot supplant the human elements essential to education—empathy, emotional intelligence, mentorship, and value formation remain uniquely human qualities critical to holistic student development. They also highlighted the involvement of parents as vital partners in guiding children’s responsible use of AI both at home and in school.

Ultimately, the educators emphasized a shift away from fear or outright prohibition of AI, advocating instead for thoughtful integration that balances technological benefits with ethical considerations and preserves essential human dimensions of teaching and learning. The focus, they concluded, should be on leveraging AI responsibly to enhance personalized learning, creativity, and research while ensuring independent thinking and human judgment remain central to the educational experience.
