Police plan to conduct a final search for a man suspected of killing his mother before disappearing last year. Jeremy Robertson, from Pāhiatua, is the primary suspect in the death of Karen Gilbert-Palmer, which authorities have been investigating since October 2022.

Robertson, believed to be in his 50s, is thought to have driven approximately 350 kilometers from Pāhiatua to Rotorua after the incident. His mother’s vehicle was found abandoned at the Blue and Green Lakes lookout on Tarawera Road. Following the discovery of the car, there has been no activity on Robertson’s bank accounts or mobile phone, suggesting he may have died soon after arriving in the Rotorua area.

Detective Sergeant Richard How spoke about the ongoing investigation, stating that police consider the most likely outcome to be Robertson’s death in the vicinity of the lakes. Tomorrow, around 20 police search and rescue personnel, along with volunteers, will carry out a final sweep around the lookout carpark in an effort to locate Robertson or any additional evidence.

Authorities are appealing for help from the public, particularly anyone who may have found medication packets or red or blue clothing in the area surrounding the lakes and nearby trails. Police have emphasized their commitment to resolving the case and providing closure for Karen Gilbert-Palmer’s family.
