After more than two decades of marriage, a woman from West Virginia found new beginnings with a longtime acquaintance amid the challenges of personal health struggles and a global pandemic. By the summer of 2019, facing the physical and emotional toll of menopause and a rare condition known as frontal fibrosing alopecia, she made the difficult decision to end her marriage. The separation brought profound pain, but also a path toward healing and reconnection.
In reaching out for support, she contacted close friends and family members, including Steve, a figure from her youth who had played an important role in her life. Their relationship traces back to 1984 in Middlebourne, West Virginia, when Steve joined her high school band as the drummer. Despite an initial romantic connection that dissolved in 1985 amid the pressures of distance and infidelity, their bond endured over the years as friends who occasionally drifted in and out of romantic involvement.
After decades of intermittent contact, Steve visited her in Los Angeles in November 2019. The couple spent time together at coastal beaches and local wine bars, rekindling feelings amid picturesque surroundings. They opted for a cautious long-distance relationship as the COVID-19 pandemic emerged shortly afterward.
In March 2020, with Steve recovering from a serious case of COVID-19, she traveled to his home in Parkersburg, West Virginia, declaring she would not leave without him. Within weeks, they packed his belongings and embarked on a road trip westward, arriving in California on Easter Sunday just as statewide quarantine restrictions took effect.
During the months that followed, the couple found solace in long walks and motorcycle rides along the Pacific Coast Highway and surrounding scenic routes. The natural beauty of the region and shared experiences helped them manage the uncertainty brought on by the pandemic and related economic disruptions.
Their renewed partnership culminated in marriage in September 2024. The author now resides in the Los Angeles suburbs with Steve and their two dogs, reflecting on a journey marked by unexpected turns and a deepening connection. At their wedding reception, her brother acknowledged their unconventional but enduring story by noting, “What a long, strange trip it’s been.”
