At 23 years old, Emma Finucane has established herself as one of the rising stars in track cycling, with her sole remaining target being a Commonwealth Games gold medal. The Carmarthen-born cyclist first made a mark at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where she earned her initial major medal competing for Team Wales. Since then, Finucane has added European, World, and Olympic titles to her résumé, solidifying her status among the sport’s elite.

Finucane returns to the Commonwealth Games arena in Glasgow in 2026, aiming to climb atop the podium after securing two bronze medals at the previous edition. The event will also bring her back to the site of her breakthrough victory, where she claimed individual sprint gold at the 2023 World Championships.

“It’s like a full circle moment for me,” Finucane said ahead of the Games. “I’ve always dreamed of standing on the top step at the Commonwealth Games. I’ve never done that, so I want to sing the anthem. It’s something I’m really excited to try to achieve.”

Finucane faces stiff competition, including from England’s Sophie Capewell, who will also contend for the individual sprint gold. The two riders recently teamed up to win Olympic team sprint gold at the 2024 Paris Games, highlighting their mutual strengths as sprinters.

Additionally, Finucane’s focus will extend to watching her boyfriend, Matthew Richardson, compete for Team England. Richardson, a sprinter with experience representing Australia in the previous Commonwealth Games, enters Glasgow as the strong favorite in the men’s keirin event.

“It’s nice for us to both have that understanding of the event,” Finucane noted, acknowledging the unique dynamic of competing alongside a partner at such a high level.

With a collection that already includes multiple international titles, Finucane is poised to add the Commonwealth gold she has long sought, aiming to cap her growing career with a defining achievement at the Glasgow Games.
