A historic church on Staten Island, known for its appearance in the film “The Godfather,” was saved from a major fire that broke out late Saturday afternoon. Firefighters responded to a four-alarm blaze that started around 5:45 p.m. in an empty warehouse near the Mount Loretto area, according to New York Fire Department (FDNY) Chief of Operations Kevin Woods.
More than 200 firefighters were deployed to the scene to contain the fire, which was driven by strong winds. The intense flames caused significant damage to the warehouse, including the collapse of the roof. FDNY officials established a collapse zone around the compromised structure to ensure responder safety.
Despite the severity of the fire, crews were able to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings on the property, which includes the historic church. Chief Woods emphasized the challenges posed by the conditions but noted the effectiveness of the containment efforts.
The FDNY continues to monitor the site as investigations into the cause of the fire proceed. No injuries have been reported at this time. The preservation of the church marks a significant success for the department amid the extensive damage sustained on the surrounding grounds.
