Craig Titchener, 40, won a £200,000 jackpot on a Winter Wonderlines Lottery scratchcard in November 2019. In 2022, he transferred £40,000 to his then-girlfriend, psychiatric nurse Heather Douglass, 37, to invest on his behalf. The two agreed to purchase premium bonds and share any returns, according to court documents.
Following their breakup, Ms. Douglass declined to return the funds. Mr. Titchener sought legal advice but found solicitors’ fees prohibitively high, prompting him to use ChatGPT for guidance on representing himself in court. The AI provided step-by-step instructions on completing the necessary paperwork for his claim at Central London County Court.
During the trial, Ms. Douglass asserted the money was a gift and accused Mr. Titchener of being controlling and harassing. District Judge Charlotte Hart determined there was insufficient evidence to back these allegations. Furthermore, Ms. Douglass was unable to substantiate her claim that the funds were a present and did not submit relevant bank statements. Consequently, the court ruled in favor of Mr. Titchener last week.
Describing the lottery win as both a “blessing and a curse,” Mr. Titchener acknowledged the experience taught him a costly lesson in trust and financial caution. He emphasized that the reclaimed money will have a significant impact on his and his sons’ lives.
