In December 2022, Dr. Aneesha Reddy Gala was at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, awaiting the People Mover train when she encountered an unexpected connection that would later lead to marriage. Gala, then finishing her first semester of medical school at the University of Cincinnati, spotted classmate Sarah Beeker on the platform along with her family—including her brother, Andrew Brian Geraghty.

At the time, Gala and Geraghty did not know each other, but their brief interaction revealed that they lived in the same Cincinnati neighborhood, Western Hills. Following the holidays, Beeker invited Gala to a family gathering to watch a football game, where Geraghty, 26, began a conversation with Gala, then 28. Initially unaware that his engagement was flirtatious, Gala later received an Instagram message from Geraghty asking for a date, which she accepted.

Their first outing took place in February, involving Thai food, ice cream, and extended conversation at Gala’s home. The date lasted seven hours and was marked by a continuous flow of dialogue. “It was the longest date I’ve ever been on, but it also felt like the shortest,” Gala recalled. “There was never a point in our conversations where we were like, ‘What do we talk about next?’”

Since then, the relationship has grown steadily. Geraghty, who holds a dual bachelor’s degree in philosophy, politics, and economics from Xavier University and a law degree from the University of Cincinnati, is currently preparing for the bar exam. Gala, originally from Houston and raised in San Jose, Calif., holds bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University and is now a resident physician at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

In subsequent months, Geraghty initiated another encounter by ordering a Scrabble game to be delivered to Gala’s home—despite his lack of interest in the game, using it as an opportunity to spend more time together. Their evenings often involved playing on the couch in his apartment, where he eventually kissed her for the first time. “I’ve not won a single game of Scrabble against her,” Geraghty admitted.

Reflecting on their unusual courtship, Gala noted, “We did things backwards. I ended up meeting the whole family before our first date.” The couple’s story underscores how chance meetings and shared neighborhood ties can spark lasting relationships, even amid the routine chaos of travel and daily life.
