Matt Fitzpatrick extended his lead at the RBC Heritage on Saturday with a three-under-par 68 at Hilton Head Island Golf Links in South Carolina, while world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler surged into second place. Fitzpatrick, the 2023 RBC Heritage champion, finished the third round at 17-under 196, holding a three-shot advantage heading into the final day.
Despite a shaky start that included bogeys on the first and third holes, Fitzpatrick recovered with impressive shots down the stretch. Notably, he holed out from off the greens on the 14th and 15th holes, making birdie and eagle, respectively. His drive onto the ninth green, a 338-yard effort, was a standout moment that resulted in a birdie. Fitzpatrick reclaimed the lead with a confident 10-foot putt on the 12th and added further birdies on 14 and 15 with deft putting and chipping. Reflecting on his round, Fitzpatrick said it was rewarding to turn things around despite not playing his best golf. He is aiming for his fourth PGA Tour title, having previously won the 2022 U.S. Open, last month’s Valspar Championship, and the RBC Heritage in 2023.
Scheffler mounted a powerful charge from seven strokes behind, making five birdies across his first six holes. The four-time major winner carded a front-nine 31, which propelled him into a tie for first at one stage. Though he settled into a series of pars on the back nine, he closed strongly with birdies on the 16th and 18th holes, finishing the day with a seven-under 64 and a total of 14-under par. Scheffler acknowledged the momentum shift after moving into contention, emphasizing the intensity of competing at the top rather than watching from the sidelines.
American Brian Harman also made headlines with the best round of the day, a career-low 63 in challenging, windy conditions at Harbour Town Golf Links. His round included nine birdies and was highlighted by a 30-foot bunker chip-in on the 17th hole, helping him finish strongly with three consecutive birdies. Harman, who hails from nearby Savannah, Georgia, said he aimed to maintain pressure, knowing the winning score would need to be low.
As the tournament concludes on Sunday, Fitzpatrick holds a three-shot lead over Scheffler, with both players poised for a competitive final round. Harman remains in striking distance, and the unpredictable conditions at Hilton Head could continue to shape the outcome of this PGA Tour event.
