Authorities have charged five individuals in connection with the seizure of more than 200 kilograms of cocaine disguised as seasoning cubes at Monrovia’s international airport. The shipment, intercepted in June, is estimated to be worth approximately $19 million, making it one of the largest drug busts in the country’s history.
Police investigations revealed that the shipment was part of a broader transnational cocaine trafficking operation that exploited Liberia’s aviation and logistics infrastructure. Inspectors also uncovered links between the June seizure and a previous shipment intercepted in May, suggesting an ongoing criminal network operating through the country’s transportation channels.
Inspector General Gregory Coleman described the operation as a significant example of organised crime using Liberia as a transit point for international drug trafficking. Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the suspects but confirmed that the five charged individuals are believed to be integral to the smuggling efforts.
The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement agencies work to dismantle the network behind these shipments and prevent further illegal drug imports through the country’s airports. The discovery has prompted calls for heightened security measures and stricter controls within Liberia’s logistics systems to curb the flow of narcotics across its borders.
