Five individuals have been sentenced to prison terms totaling more than 30 years for the abduction and blackmail of an American tourist in northwest London. The group, consisting of Aton Okuefuna, 21; Ayoub Salad, 20; Nathaniel Mebrathu, 20; Bushra Ahmed, 20; and Daevon Desrie, 22, targeted Ayub Ali, a visitor from San Diego, California.

According to court proceedings at Southwark Crown Court, the incident occurred on October 4 of the previous year. Bushra Ahmed had reportedly met Ali and his brother a few days before the kidnapping. She tried on a Rolex watch and took a selfie with it, which appears to have played a role in identifying Ali as a target. Ahmed lured Ali to an Airbnb property in Wembley using messages, where he was forcibly placed into a white Mercedes by the group.

Prosecutors said the gang searched Ali's phone and found a photo of a Rolex, leading them to believe he possessed substantial wealth. The group then contacted Ali’s family in the United States, demanding a ransom payment of £50,000 either in cash or cryptocurrency. Threats were made against Ali's life, including warnings that he would be stabbed, have his fingers cut off, or killed if the ransom was not paid.

In a victim personal statement read during the trial, Ali described ongoing trauma following the ordeal, stating he lives with continuous fear and anxiety and no longer feels safe in situations that once seemed normal. He also detailed the psychological impact of the incident, saying he often replays the events and struggles to process the experience.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Stephen Tomlinson described the car where Ali was held as effectively a prison and emphasized that the crime was motivated by financial gain. Ahmed had claimed the messages sent during the incident were intended as a joke. However, the court rejected this defense.

The five defendants received varying prison sentences: Desrie, from Wembley, was sentenced to eight years with an additional 12 months added from a prior suspended sentence; Mebrathu, from Bexley in southeast London, was jailed for six and a half years; Okuefuna, also of Wembley, received a six-year sentence; Salad, from Camden in north London, was given five years and five months; and Ahmed, from Deptford in southeast London, was sentenced to five years.
