Five people were injured in a stabbing incident at New York City’s Penn Station on Sunday evening, authorities reported. Emergency responders arrived shortly after 7 p.m. and found one victim seriously wounded, two with moderate injuries, and two with minor wounds. All victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment.

The attack took place in the mezzanine area leading to Amtrak trains, within one of the busiest transit hubs in the city. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with blood visible on the floor and commuters fleeing in panic. One bystander, Adil Kha, who works in a retail store inside the station, recounted seeing a young man stabbed in the face and bleeding heavily.

A suspect, described as a man in his 50s, was apprehended at the scene by Amtrak police officers. There are unconfirmed reports that the suspect may have sustained a self-inflicted injury during the incident. Authorities also transported a sixth person to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell, although it is unclear if this individual was the suspect or another victim. Law enforcement has not released further details on the motive behind the stabbings, and an investigation is ongoing.

The New York Police Department referred inquiries to Amtrak, which confirmed that train services were not disrupted by the incident. The stabbings occurred in an area below Madison Square Garden, which was preparing to host Game 3 of the NBA Finals the following evening. The event has generated heightened security in the vicinity, involving the Secret Service, NYPD, and other agencies given the anticipated attendance of former President Donald Trump.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams expressed sympathy for the victims via social media, condemning the violence and praising the swift response of law enforcement personnel. Hochul called the incident “horrific,” while Mayor Adams noted that the suspect was apprehended quickly following the attack.

The incident has raised concerns given Penn Station’s role as a major transit hub, where millions of commuters and visitors pass annually. Authorities have not indicated whether the stabbing will affect security arrangements for the upcoming NBA Finals game. Investigators continue to gather information as the situation remains under active review.
