A five-year-old boy died after being found restrained with duct tape in a home in Grafton, Australia, authorities reported. Police were called to the residence shortly before 6:40 a.m. on October 12 following reports that a child was unresponsive. Upon arrival, officers commenced CPR until paramedics took over, but the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to New South Wales police, the child had been bound to a sleeping bag with duct tape that also served as a blindfold. The boy’s siblings were reportedly restrained in a similar manner when officers arrived. The boy’s father and stepmother were present at the home at the time of the incident.

Investigators said the couple told detectives that the duct tape was used as a method to help the children sleep. The circumstances surrounding the case remain under investigation as authorities seek to determine the factors contributing to the boy’s death. No further details about charges or ongoing legal proceedings have been released.
