Ebbsfleet United continued their impressive run in the league with a dominant 6-1 victory over Weston-super-Mare on Saturday. The win, which follows a high-scoring performance earlier in the week, propelled Ebbsfleet to second place in the standings, a remarkable climb from 22nd as the team caught up on games in hand.
Fleet manager Josh Wright praised his side’s performance after the match, highlighting their discipline and commitment. “Can I fault us? No, I can’t,” Wright said. “This is an incredible result against a side who don’t usually concede goals. The players are doing it right. They’re listening, they’re buying into it and they’re doing everything it takes to get results. But you’re never the finished article, and we’ve got a lot more to come.”
The match got off to an electrifying start when Kwesi Appiah opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Receiving a long 40-yard pass from Lennon Peake, Appiah outmaneuvered Weston’s goalkeeper Sam Avery and then rounded Max Harris to place the ball in the net. Early momentum continued as Daniel Ogunleye added a second for Ebbsfleet, redirecting a precise free-kick from Peake into the goal.
Appiah found the net again with his second goal, capitalizing on another assist from Peake, who delivered a corner that allowed the captain to head the ball across goal. Despite Max Harris getting a hand to the ball, it crossed the line for Ebbsfleet’s third. The Fleet maintained their attacking threat throughout the first half, creating several chances, including a close miss by Appiah and a nearly successful effort from Toby Edser, before Gene Kennedy’s powerful strike in the 40th minute extended the lead to four.
Weston struggled to match Ebbsfleet’s rhythm and intensity, as the visitors added a fifth goal just four minutes into the second half. James Vennings showed tenacity by chasing down a lost ball and setting up Ogunleye, who finished clinically to secure his second goal of the match. The highlight of the evening came in the 73rd minute when Charlie Seaman, returning from injury and playing his first minutes since July, curled a free-kick into the net shortly after entering as a substitute, marking the sixth goal.
Weston managed a late consolation through Ollie Hulbert’s diving header in the closing moments, but their afternoon was marred by the dismissal of defender Michael Smith. Smith was sent off following an altercation with Ogunleye near the touchline.
With this comprehensive victory, Ebbsfleet United reaffirmed their status as serious contenders in the league, continuing a remarkable upward trajectory under Wright’s guidance. Meanwhile, Weston-super-Mare will be left to regroup after a difficult afternoon in front of their home supporters.
