The Flemington race meeting on Saturday featured notable performances across a range of events despite challenging wet track conditions primarily caused by persistent rain.

Hankee Alpha, a five-year-old mare recently imported from New Zealand, made an impressive Australian debut in Race 2, the Benchmark 78 contest. Displaying a dominant front-running effort, she established a commanding six-length winning margin. Her strong acceleration over the final 400 meters suggested potential for success in more competitive races, especially on firmer ground.

In the Listed Super Impose Stakes (Race 3), Skua stepped up from maiden class and ran a promising race despite finishing sixth by almost five lengths. The son of Ghaiyyath encountered a wide trip, running three-wide throughout the 1800-meter contest from barrier eight on the heavy track. While Skua was unable to contend with the winner Miss Waititi, his persistence and late effort indicated possible staying ability, raising hopes for a future Victoria Derby campaign.

Race 4’s Edward Manifold Stakes, with a prize pool of $300,000, showcased Joely’s potential as a staying type. The three-year-old filly finished runner-up, six lengths behind the winner, demonstrating steady improvement throughout the race. Running third start, she settled midfield before closing strongly in the home straight, suggesting she is nearing a breakthrough victory.

Grahame Begg-trained Cilacap, returning from a spell, competed in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (Race 5) and placed fifth by just over two lengths. Despite a difficult draw and running wide without cover, the mare finished well in the final stages and could be a contender over the 1600-meter distance in upcoming races.

King Zephyr, known to struggle on rain-affected surfaces, ran fourth in the Gilgai Stakes (Race 9). Held up behind runners and caught in traffic in the straight, the horse showed signs of fitness and is anticipated to improve as the campaign progresses.

Other notable performances included Please Forgive Natural Fling, who started as the favorite in the Danehill Stakes (Race 6) but was narrowly beaten by 0.3 lengths after showing early speed. Ten Commandments, while finishing seventh in Race 10, showed encouragement with a strong late run and could rebound in future starts.

The meeting was not without controversy or incidents. Queen Christine was disqualified for bleeding from both nostrils in her first outing and is suspended from racing for three months. In Race 3, jockey Declan Bates was fined for excessive whip use. Jamie Melham received a 10-meeting suspension for careless riding in Race 8. Additional jockey fines were issued for failure to ride mounts out in Races 9 and 10.

Other stewards’ reports included Profligate’s scratching due to signs of colic, Jennivamoose being pulled up lame, and multiple runners being hindered by traffic during their races.

Overall, the day’s results highlighted several horses with promising prospects while underscoring the ongoing challenges posed by the wet track conditions at Flemington.
