Heavy rainfall totaling more than 60 millimeters in the two days before the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington posed a significant challenge to the Victoria Racing Club (VRC), threatening potential financial losses if the event were postponed or canceled. Despite the adverse weather, the Flemington track maintained excellent condition, allowing the meeting to proceed as planned on Saturday and even prompting two upgrades to track ratings amid cold and overcast conditions.
Course manager Liam O’Keeffe attributed the track’s resilience to ongoing investment and maintenance. “It’s certainly paid for itself a million times over and it’s worth every cent that we spend on maintenance and renovations through the year,” he said, emphasizing the considerable effort required to preserve the turf surface, now 21 years old. The track is scheduled for replacement after the 2027 Melbourne Cup carnival, which will involve removing a substantial layer of organic material that has accumulated beneath the grass. This buildup has reduced the track’s original drainage capacity of 100 millimeters per hour. O’Keeffe explained that while routine renovations remove roughly five to ten percent of the organic matter, the scheduled resurfacing will eliminate about 80 percent, significantly improving drainage by extracting approximately 70 millimeters of organic layer and leaving a 30-millimeter cushion.
In related racing news, Half Yours is set to pursue a rare feat by attempting to become the first horse in 70 years to win the Caulfield Cup in consecutive years. Regular jockey Jamie Melham will be unavailable, however, as he is committed to riding Blue Door in The Everest at Randwick on the same day. Consequently, trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy secured Group 1 jockey Mark Zahra to ride Half Yours in the Caulfield Cup. The horse is aiming to replicate the back-to-back victories of Rising Fast from 1954-55. While six other horses have won the Caulfield Cup twice, none have done so in consecutive years.
Half Yours recently finished fifth in the Turnbull Stakes, 6½ lengths behind winner Cosmic Crusader. Despite this, bookmakers have shortened the horse’s odds for the Caulfield Cup from $11 to $9. Meanwhile, defending favorite Zahra, trained by Ciaron Maher, finished 11th out of 13 in the Turnbull Stakes, trailing the winner by more than 18 lengths. Zahra’s odds eased slightly from $6 to $7 ahead of the upcoming race.
