Flights to Ibiza were redirected on Monday after severe flash flooding forced the temporary closure of the island’s airport. Passengers traveling from cities including London, Manchester, and Liverpool experienced delays as Storm Adam disrupted travel plans.
The airport suspended all landings between 1:48 p.m. and 3:10 p.m. local time, with reports and social media posts showing waterlogged departure areas. The intense storm, developing over the weekend, caused widespread damage along Spain’s eastern and southern coasts.
Authorities confirmed that a woman in her 40s died after being swept away by a rapidly rising stream in Cabrera de Mar, northeast of Barcelona. The area also saw multiple incidents of drivers becoming stranded in their vehicles amid flooded streets. In Barcelona itself, basement levels of buildings filled with water, prompting emergency responses.
Residents in Valencia received official warnings advising them to remain indoors as flooding threats escalated. Spain’s southern coastal regions remained on alert, with state meteorological agency Aemet characterizing the situation as having “extraordinary” meteorological danger.
The flooding followed days of heavy rain associated with Storm Adam, which brought significant disruption to daily life and travel across the affected areas. Officials continue to monitor weather conditions closely as the region prepares for possible further flooding.
