A promising young rugby player, Sami, died following a stabbing incident in Auckland last week, authorities confirmed. The attack occurred near a bus stop on Blockhouse Bay Road after Sami reportedly left a nearby house with several associates.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and Sami was transported to Auckland City Hospital in critical condition. Despite undergoing emergency surgery and remaining in intensive care, he passed away the following evening.

Sami was widely remembered during memorial services held last week, which reflected on his sporting achievements and warm personality. Tributes shared online highlighted his "infectious smile" and his ability to "light up a room," with many friends describing him as a brother. One message referenced his connection to Kelston Boys’ High School, where he had developed as a talented rugby player, stating, “Forever a Kelstonian.”

During his time at Kelston Boys’ High School, Sami was a key member of the First XV rugby team that secured back-to-back Auckland 1A titles in 2021 and 2022. He notably contributed to the dramatic 24-22 win over St Peter’s College in the 2022 final at Eden Park, scoring a try and setting up another by evading several defenders. His rugby prowess earned him selection for the New Zealand Schools side.

Former teammates expressed their grief and admiration via social media. One wrote, “I will never forget our little convos on the sideline. Gone too soon my boy. Fly high Star! Shine bright my man.”

Family members described Sami as a loving individual who brought joy to those around him. A relative said, “His name was perfect for him, he was a star in everything he did. He could make anyone laugh and make you feel included. He had his own way of making you feel like you mattered.”

Residents on Holbrook Street reported that a group of young people had gathered at a house before spilling out onto the street. One neighbor described hearing “loud” and “scary” screaming as the confrontation unfolded.
