Folarin Balogun has acknowledged the controversy surrounding the decision to clear him to play for the United States against Belgium despite a red card he received in the previous match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The move to suspend his automatic one-match ban remains surrounded by uncertainty, particularly after US President Donald Trump confirmed that he personally lobbied FIFA President Gianni Infantino to reconsider the suspension.
Balogun, who was not involved in the decision-making process, described the situation as “controversial” but emphasized his acceptance of the ruling once it was communicated to him. “It had nothing to do with me personally,” he said. Following the match, Balogun approached Belgium coach Rudi Garcia to congratulate him on the victory. Garcia responded by expressing respect for the player, stating, “He’s not to blame. He didn’t do anything wrong.”
The eligibility ruling did not prevent the United States from suffering a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in their World Cup match held in Seattle. Malik Tilman scored for the US to level the game briefly, but Belgium responded with goals from Charles De Ketelaere (two), Hans Vanaken, and Romelu Lukaku. Belgian midfielder Nicolas Raskin noted a sense of injustice within the team but added that it only strengthened their resolve on the field.
The decision to overturn Balogun's suspension has sparked criticism and raised questions about potential political interference in FIFA's disciplinary processes. Despite these concerns, Gianni Infantino maintained that the decision was made solely by FIFA’s independent disciplinary committee. The Belgian Football Association, whose appeal against the decision was dismissed earlier in the week, has yet to indicate whether it will pursue further action.
US head coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed disappointment over the political discourse overshadowing his team’s exit. He stated that the situation "didn’t affect our performance" but lamented the negative backlash directed at the team and the player. Pochettino dismissed suggestions of unfair advantage, noting that if FIFA permitted Balogun to play, the team’s priority was simply to focus on coaching and preparation. He also voiced his dismay over the emphasis on "politics and manipulation," highlighting his personal disappointment in how the matter has been handled publicly.
Belgium used the occasion to reinforce their position on social media, posting the phrase “overturn this” alongside images of Lukaku celebrating. While the outcome marked the end of the United States’ World Cup run, the incident surrounding Balogun’s eligibility continues to be a subject of debate in international football circles.
