Folarin Balogun emerged as a key figure for the United States men’s national soccer team following a standout performance in their opening World Cup match in Los Angeles. The 24-year-old striker, who plays for Monaco, scored twice in a 4-1 victory against Paraguay on Sunday, helping to spark optimism for the host nation in the tournament.
Balogun’s eligibility to represent the United States stems from an unusual circumstance nearly 25 years ago. His mother, Florence, was prevented from boarding a flight from New York to London during her pregnancy in 2001 due to safety concerns and airline regulations requiring a doctor’s note. As a result, Balogun was born in the United States. Although raised in England, where he progressed through Arsenal’s youth system, Balogun opted to represent the United States over England and Nigeria, the latter of which reflects his heritage.
The match at a near-capacity Los Angeles Stadium saw Balogun open the scoring with two well-taken goals in the first half. One goal originated from a pass by Christian Pulisic, the team captain and current AC Milan player, who earned praise from teammates for his creativity and teamwork throughout the match. The U.S. also benefited from an own goal by Paraguay and a late strike from Giovanni Reyna in injury time. The result marked a strong start to the tournament for the U.S., who scored more goals in this one match than they did in all of their group and knockout games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino praised the atmosphere and the team’s performance, emphasizing both the significance of the win and the importance of maintaining focus as the tournament progresses. “The passion and feeling from the American fans today was amazing,” Pochettino said, reflecting on the enthusiastic crowd support. “This is only the beginning. We need to keep improving and keep building on this.”
Players expressed pride in representing their country on home soil. Midfielder Weston McKennie described the experience of hearing the national anthem and the crowd’s response as “something that just felt special,” while defender Chris Richards highlighted the team’s determination to prove their capabilities regardless of external expectations.
The victory was also notable for the involvement of former Arsenal loanee Balogun, who has earned 28 caps and scored 11 goals for the United States to date. Pulisic, who assisted one of Balogun’s goals, called him “lethal right now in front of goal” and expressed hope that his performance would continue throughout the competition.
Looking ahead, the United States faces Australia in their next group match on Friday, with the opportunity to strengthen their position and advance to the knockout stage. Pochettino and his squad remain focused on the challenges ahead, aware that consistency will be critical to their aspirations at this World Cup.
