Apple’s first foldable iPhone, available in the United Arab Emirates, is drawing attention for both its premium price and extended delivery times. The device, known as the iPhone Duo, began sales on October 23 following pre-orders starting October 16. However, some customers attempting to purchase the phone through Apple’s UAE online store faced estimated delivery dates as far out as January 22, 2027, nearly three months after the initial launch.

This extended wait time appears to vary depending on the model configuration, with factors such as storage capacity and color influencing availability. Earlier pre-orders likely secured earlier delivery dates, but for new customers, lead times may be substantially longer.

The iPhone Duo starts at Dh8,499 for the base 256GB model, rising to Dh9,349 for 512GB, Dh11,049 for 1TB, and Dh13,599 for 2TB. Across all versions, it carries a premium of approximately Dh3,000 over the comparable iPhone 18 Pro Max and about Dh3,400 over the smaller iPhone 18 Pro. Even the lowest-tier Duo costs more than the 1TB Pro Max model, which is priced at Dh8,049. This pricing strategy signals that buyers are primarily paying for the foldable display technology rather than expanded storage capacity or enhanced camera systems.

Technically, the iPhone Duo shares several features with Apple’s current flagship models, including the A20 Pro processor, ProMotion OLED displays capable of 120Hz refresh rates, MagSafe wireless charging, and USB 3 connectivity via USB-C. The defining characteristic is the foldable display: when closed, it offers a 5.4-inch screen on the outside, but when unfolded like a book, it reveals a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple states this provides roughly 50% more screen area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both displays incorporate OLED panels, while the inner screen features a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections.

Beyond the handset price, buyers face additional costs for protection and accessories. Two years of AppleCare+ coverage adds Dh1,349, raising the cost of the entry-level model to nearly Dh9,850 before including any cases. Apple offers a standard Duo Case at Dh319 and a Folio Case with Kickstand at Dh529. Battery replacement costs are higher as well; in the U.S., an out-of-warranty battery swap for the Duo is $229 compared to $129 for the iPhone 18 Pro models. While these figures are based on U.S. service pricing, they illustrate the potential premium in maintenance costs.

Repair costs may also be substantial. For example, under U.S. AppleCare+ policies, fixing the Duo’s inner screen incurs a $99 excess, significantly more than the $29 charge for the outer display. In the UAE, Apple lists Dh99 for screen or back-glass damage and Dh349 for other accidental damage across iPhone models, though no specific details are provided for the folding components. The Duo’s inner display also has a replaceable protective top layer that only Apple can service, adding complexity to potential repairs.

Trade-in programs are available to reduce the purchase cost, depending on the condition and model of the device being traded. However, the full lifetime ownership expense remains difficult to predict due to the lack of detailed repair cost information for the folding mechanism and hinge assembly.

For buyers, deciding whether the foldable form factor justifies the higher price and delayed delivery hinges on how much value they place on the additional screen real estate and the trade-offs involved, such as giving up some camera convenience and managing higher repair and insurance costs. Delivery estimates can be checked at the point of order and monitored via customer accounts to plan accordingly.
