Priscilla Koh, a long-time admirer of the South Korean boy band BigBang, is embarking on an extensive journey to follow the group’s ongoing world tour. At 36 years old, Koh has been a dedicated fan, or "VIP," since 2008, when she first encountered the band on the variety show Family Outing, which featured member Daesung. At that time, Koh was in junior college and not yet a follower of K-pop. However, BigBang's unique style and the presence of rapper and producer G-Dragon captured her attention.
Koh recounts that her appreciation for G-Dragon stems from his multifaceted musical talents, as he writes and produces much of BigBang’s work. She respects artists who maintain creative control over their music and considers G-Dragon a visionary. Over the years, she has attended several BigBang concerts in Singapore, in 2012 and 2015, as well as G-Dragon’s solo tours in 2013 and 2017. Financial constraints limited her ability to travel to shows abroad during those years.
Following 2017, Koh anticipated a short break while the members completed their mandatory military service, but this hiatus extended to nearly eight years. When G-Dragon announced his 2024 solo tour, she and fellow VIPs decided to attend as many concerts as possible. At the tour’s final show in Seoul, Koh said she was moved when members Taeyang and Daesung joined G-Dragon on stage.
For BigBang’s current XX : Cosmos world tour, Koh plans to attend all shows except those in the United States, Europe, and several Asian cities including Jakarta, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. She has connected with other fans through social media and pop-up events in Singapore, often traveling in groups of 10 to 20. Ticketing challenges mean that fans sometimes sit separately at concerts, which Koh views as opportunities to meet new people.
Her dedication has surprised those close to her. Koh shared that her husband, a 34-year-old finance professional, was initially taken aback by her intense fandom, as were some friends. The couple lives in a four-room flat in Singapore’s public housing, which Koh has decorated extensively with BigBang posters and merchandise. Even her Mini Cooper features motifs inspired by G-Dragon.
For Koh, the value lies not in the band members’ recognition of individual fans but in the shared experience of support and community within the fanbase. Having already seen BigBang at a concert in Goyang, South Korea, earlier this year, she looks forward to their upcoming performances in Singapore. Alongside fellow VIPs, Koh is organizing meet-ups at the National Stadium to exchange homemade gifts and celebrate the band’s return to the city, hopeful that the concerts will encourage more frequent visits in the future.
