A youth football coach in Edinburgh has admitted to stealing more than £20,000 intended to fund a trip for an under-16 team, authorities said. Paul Fraser, 45, who worked with the Hutchison Vale football club, pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining £22,644 between June 2023 and April 2024.

The money was collected from parents to support the team’s planned participation in the Copa Daurada 2024 tournament in Salou, near Barcelona, Spain. However, the trip was cancelled after the funds went missing, prompting complaints from parents and a subsequent police investigation. Fraser, a self-employed builder from Broomhouse, Edinburgh, was arrested and charged.

In court at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, prosecutor Sophia Ramsan indicated that the Crown is preparing a detailed statement outlining the nature of the fraud, which will be read aloud at the next hearing. Defence counsel Stephen Mannifield attributed Fraser’s actions to a gambling addiction and requested that his client remain on bail while reports on his background and circumstances are compiled.

Sheriff Julius Komorowski granted the bail request but emphasized the seriousness of the offence, noting the breach of trust and responsibility involved. The judge acknowledged that imprisonment may be considered but indicated a preference to explore alternative measures, depending on Fraser’s ability to repay the funds. Sentencing was deferred to allow for the preparation of relevant reports.

Following the hearing, Fraser attempted to conceal his identity as he left the courthouse by covering his face with a hood and mask.

The revelation of the theft came as a blow to both the club and the families affected. One parent called Fraser "a total scumbag," expressing disappointment that the theft not only deprived the club of essential funds but also robbed the children of an eagerly anticipated opportunity to compete internationally.

Hutchison Vale, based in Edinburgh's Saughton area, is well-regarded for its youth development and has produced professional players such as John Collins and Kenny Miller. The club now faces the challenge of rebuilding trust following the incident.
