The coach of footballer Maddy Cusack reportedly called her a "psycho" and made comments about her weight during his time at Sheffield United, an inquest heard this week. Cusack, 27, who played for Sheffield United Women, was found deceased at her family home in Horsley, Derbyshire, on September 20, 2023.
Jonathan Morgan, who served as the team’s coach, had previously worked with Cusack at Leicester City before joining Sheffield United in early 2023. Grace Riglar, Cusack’s partner and teammate, told Chesterfield Coroner’s Court that Cusack was anxious about Morgan’s arrival due to their prior working relationship. Riglar stated that Morgan called Cusack a “psycho” from the sideline during matches. While Cusack did not openly express how these remarks affected her, Riglar said the comments caused her discomfort.
In addition to the insult, Riglar said Morgan made remarks about Cusack’s weight and personal relationships, which Cusack perceived as "mind games." The nature and impact of these interactions have been a focus at the inquest, which remains ongoing.
Cusack’s death has prompted further examination of the environment within the club as well as the conduct of coaching staff. The investigation continues to gather evidence and testimony to determine the circumstances leading up to her death.
