Nottingham Forest have appointed Oliver Glasner as their new head coach, marking their fifth managerial change in less than a year. The decision came after the club activated a break clause in Vítor Pereira’s contract, ending the Portuguese coach’s brief tenure at the City Ground. The move was confirmed late Tuesday night.
Pereira, who had taken over in February following Sean Dyche’s departure and helped Forest avoid relegation, was reportedly surprised by the decision. He had already planned preseason activities in Portugal and engaged in transfer discussions before being informed of his dismissal via email just before midnight.
Glasner, who left Crystal Palace at the end of the season, is set to sign a three-year deal. The Austrian coach is highly regarded by Forest’s technical director, George Syrianos, and is viewed as a better fit for the squad’s style and long-term ambitions. Forest had previously considered Glasner for the role in late 2023 but instead appointed Nuno Espírito Santo following Steve Cooper’s exit. Glasner won the Europa Conference League with Palace as his final achievement and managed to improve their domestic form amid the sale of captain Marc Guéhi, despite announcing in January that he would not extend his contract.
Since Nuno’s departure in August, Forest have experienced considerable managerial instability. Ange Postecoglou was dismissed after eight winless Premier League matches, and Dyche’s tenure ended amid strained relationships with several players. Pereira’s mid-season arrival helped stabilize the team, but the club ultimately finished 16th in the Premier League, one point behind Crystal Palace.
Glasner will begin his tenure without midfielder Elliot Anderson, who is reportedly set to complete a £116 million transfer to Manchester City. Forest are targeting Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall as a possible replacement, though they face competition from other clubs for the young midfielder’s signature.
The club is hoping Glasner’s appointment will provide the stability and progress they have sought throughout a turbulent season.
