For over five decades, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has delivered medical care to people in crisis zones worldwide, operating independently of government funding to maintain neutrality and impartiality. The organization’s field teams have performed surgery in challenging conditions—on floors, in corridors, and even by headlamp—providing critical services such as emergency childbirth and trauma care in areas affected by conflict and disaster.

Henry Gray, a veteran MSF worker with two decades of intermittent service, recounted his first assignment establishing a hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The region, home to approximately 125,000 people, lacked basic health services after years of conflict. Essential procedures such as cesarean sections were unavailable, and there was no access to medicines, vaccinations, or disease treatment. MSF’s mission there was to rapidly set up an emergency hospital to fill this critical gap.

From the outset, Gray emphasized the organization’s broader approach beyond immediate medical care. MSF prioritized community involvement by hiring and training local staff to ensure sustainable healthcare delivery. The initiative not only saved lives but also had a wider social and economic impact. For example, when the hospital’s generators illuminated the area, children used the lights to study, and local businesses began to develop. Gray noted similar transformative effects in other emergency contexts, including war zones, Ebola outbreaks, and natural disasters.

MSF is largely funded through private donations rather than government contributions, which helps preserve its independent stance. Approximately 20% of its programs receive support from bequests left by individual donors. The group encourages supporters to consider legacy giving, which it says will help secure ongoing access to emergency medical care worldwide.

Dr. Rachael Craven, MSF’s President and an anesthetist, underscored the organization’s commitment to delivering healthcare wherever it is needed. She emphasized that this mission depends not only on the current efforts of MSF teams but also on the continued generosity of donors contributing to the organization’s future sustainability.

The organization stresses that donor contributions are essential for maintaining its capacity to respond swiftly and effectively to crises without borders.
