John Mincher, a former contestant on the 2024 series of The Great British Bake Off, appeared in court last week facing charges related to indecent images of a child. The 39-year-old, who was recognized as "star baker" by judge Paul Hollywood during the show, was arrested in August after police reportedly discovered two indecent images classified as Category A—the most serious level—on his electronic devices.
Mincher, an NHS worker from Wolverhampton, appeared before Deputy District Judge Kate Harney at Wolverhampton magistrates’ court on Friday. He entered a not guilty plea to a single count of making two indecent images of a child and elected to have his case heard by a jury. He is scheduled to appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court next month. The judge described the offenses as “incredibly serious” and released Mincher on conditional bail pending the trial.
Mincher gained public attention during the early stages of the Channel 4 baking competition, where he emotionally received the title of star baker in the first episode. His success on the show led to a degree of local fame, with fans approaching him in his hometown and expressing support. Following his appearance on The Great British Bake Off, Mincher spoke about plans to publish a book and described forming a friendly rapport with fellow contestant Alison Hammond, highlighting a shared regional connection.
The case remains pending, with the accused maintaining his not guilty plea. Further proceedings are expected to clarify the charges and the evidence involved.
