Sara Murray, former chief executive of Big Technologies, has filed a defamation lawsuit against the publicly traded company she founded, alleging that the firm made damaging accusations against her in a stock market announcement last year. Murray contends that the company’s board implied she committed a serious criminal offense—which, if proven, could result in imprisonment—by alleging she forged documents prior to the company’s £577 million public listing in 2021.
The 57-year-old former government adviser is seeking damages for what she describes as defamatory statements and is also requesting a court injunction to prevent the company from repeating the allegations. Additionally, Murray aims to compel third parties to remove reports based on those claims.
Big Technologies, which provides electronic location tracking services to law enforcement, probation agencies, and social care sectors, was established from Buddi, the startup initiated by Murray in 2004. She was dismissed from her role as chief executive in March 2025.
In response, Big Technologies said it “robustly disputes the defamation claim” and is preparing a formal response. The company is simultaneously pursuing legal action against Murray, asserting that she had undisclosed connections to controversial offshore entities linked to a family trust that reportedly held assets exceeding £100 million at the time of the stock market listing.
Murray has denied all allegations of wrongdoing. While acknowledging her association with the offshore firms, she maintains that she neither owned nor controlled them. The case highlights ongoing tensions between Murray and Big Technologies concerning the circumstances surrounding the company’s initial public offering and governance issues raised in the wake of her departure.
