Daveigh Chase, the former child actor known for her roles in the Disney animated film “Lilo & Stitch” and the horror movie “The Ring,” died last week at age 35 from complications related to bacterial meningitis and a blood infection, her father John David Schwallier confirmed. The actor’s boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, also cited septic issues as contributing factors to her death.

Born on July 24, 1990, Chase began acting in the late 1990s, appearing in television shows such as “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” “Charmed,” and “ER.” She gained early recognition with her role as Samantha Darko in the 2001 cult film “Donnie Darko,” a part she reprised in the 2009 sequel, “S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale.” That same year, she provided the English voice for the protagonist Chihiro in the American dub of the animated film “Spirited Away,” which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003.

Chase’s career is perhaps most noted for two contrasting roles she took on in 2002. She voiced the lead character Lilo in Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” earning an Annie Award for her work in voice acting and subsequently voicing the character in the follow-up Disney Channel series. Later that year, Chase took a darker turn playing the ghost Samara Morgan in the supernatural horror film “The Ring.” This role became iconic among horror fans, with her character’s pale face and long black hair becoming a widely recognized image in the genre.

In discussing her portrayal of Samara, Chase described creating the character’s distinctive voice by adding a “freaky twist” to her own, drawing comparisons to performances like Linda Blair’s in “The Exorcist.” “The Ring” was a remake of a 1998 Japanese film, itself based on a 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki.

During the 2000s, Chase also had recurring roles in television series such as the Fox sitcom “Oliver Beene” and HBO’s “Big Love,” the latter earning several Emmy nominations. However, her acting career slowed considerably in later years, and her last credited work was a voice role in the 2016 video game “Let It Die.”

In addition to health struggles leading to her death, reports indicated that Chase faced challenges with drug addiction and periods of homelessness during her later life.
