Former Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration seeking to compel officials to preserve records related to criminal investigations involving him. The legal action, initiated on Wednesday, aims to secure evidence Brennan’s legal team says is necessary to challenge any future prosecution.
Brennan’s attorneys argue the lawsuit is a preemptive measure in response to what they describe as politicized and vindictive efforts by government officials to target him. The complaint highlights more than 100 public statements from former President Donald Trump criticizing Brennan since 2017. These statements, the suit contends, demonstrate a pattern of retribution rather than impartial law enforcement.
According to the filing, senior Justice Department officials have characterized Brennan as a criminal without filing formal charges, and are engaging in “irregular prosecutorial activity” to appease directives from the former president. The lawsuit requests a judicial order requiring preservation of records to allow a court to evaluate whether any prosecution would be motivated by retaliatory intent.
The suit names former President Trump, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, and other law enforcement officials as defendants. Brennan, who led the CIA from 2013 until stepping down in early 2017, was appointed by President Barack Obama and had a 25-year career with the agency.
A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to confirm or deny the existence of an investigation related to Brennan, responding to the lawsuit’s allegations by calling it “rich” that Brennan accuses others of a “retribution campaign.” The department’s statement reflected a refusal to comment further on ongoing or potential inquiries.
The case underscores ongoing tensions between Brennan and Trump, reflecting broader conflicts stemming from Brennan’s criticisms of the former president during and after his time in office. The litigation could become a significant moment in determining the scope and fairness of investigations involving former intelligence officials and political figures.
