Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in Northern Ireland, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for historic sexual offenses against two girls. The 63-year-old was convicted in June of 18 offenses, including rape and sexual assaults, which occurred between 1985 and 2008.
At Newry Crown Court in County Armagh, Judge Paul Ramsey described Donaldson’s actions as a “catastrophic descent into disgrace.” The judge noted that Donaldson had consistently denied the allegations and had not expressed any remorse or apology since his conviction. He praised the courage and determination of the two women who came forward as children to ensure justice was served.
In a related development, Donaldson’s wife, Eleanor Donaldson, 60, was found to have aided and abetted his offenses. However, she was deemed unfit to stand trial due to mental health reasons.
The case has attracted significant public attention, given Donaldson’s prominence as a former political leader. The sentencing marks a significant legal and personal downfall for the former DUP figure, reflecting the serious nature of the crimes and the impact on the survivors.
